Prayer Activity

Remembrance – Poppy Prayers

These activities have been developed, not to trivialise Remembrance Day, but to increase understanding and awareness by engaging pupils with the realities of World War One (WW1).

In WW1, 32 nations fought for 4 years, 3 months and 2 weeks, from 28th July 1914 – 11th November 1918. People fought for their countries, and they fought for what they believed to be right. More than 16 million soldiers died, including many in a region of Northern France and Belgium known as Flanders Fields. Every year, thousands of red poppies grow in these fields, and therefore people wear poppies to remember the soldiers who fought and died during WW1.

This activity was adapted from Jane Whittington, Schools Officer (Christian Distinctiveness) for the Diocese of Guildford.
