Prayer Activity

Remembrance – Peace Buttons

These activities have been developed, not to trivialise Remembrance Day, but to increase understanding and awareness by engaging pupils with the realities of war.

In World War One, 32 nations fought for 4 years, 3 months and 2 weeks, from 28th July 1914 – 11th November 1918. People fought for their country, and they fought for what they believed to be right. More than 16 million of them died. In 1914, for a few days over Christmas, there was a truce, a brief pause in the fighting. During the truce, soldiers from both sides gave gifts to one another – some gave buttons. Many soldiers kept these buttons to remember that moment of peace in the middle of war.

This activity was adapted from Jane Whittington, Schools Officer (Christian Distinctiveness) for the Diocese of Guildford.
